The ancient city of Miletus will host a classical music concert Saturday night. The National Youth Symphony Orchestra will perform at the ancient amphitheater in Miletus in an event organized by Didim, Söke and Kuşadası municipalities, in the Aegean region.

Meandros Culture, Arts and Tourism Association Chairwoman Başak Kamacı said in a written statement that the association continues to support projects that contribute to the cultural and historical legacy of the Meandros Delta.

Kamacı said the orchestra had in the past given concerts at the Apollo Temple and the ancient city of Miletus, and created a fan base in the region both among young and old residents.

The National Youth Symphony Orchestra consists of around 100 young musicians from all the music and arts faculties of Turkish universities. The concert will be held at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, and the orchestra will be conducted by world-renowned Turkish conductor Cem Mansur.

Miletus was an ancient city on the western coast of Anatolia, near the mouth of the Maeander River in ancient Caria. It was first founded in 3000 B.C. and was first inhabited by the Minoans and by the Mycenaeans.

Ionians came to Miletus in 1000 BC. According to a legend, sacred animals of Apollo, dolphins guided Ionians toward present day Miletus. On arriving at Miletus, Ionians built a shrine to Apollo and called it Dephiniaon. With the help of its location, people of Miletus established 90 colonies all over the Mediterranean Basin including Sinop on the Black Sea coast and Naucratis on the Egyptian Delta.
